“BETTER THAN MOST” (Gary Koch famous quote from another day)

Augustachronicle.com

The improbable return, the one player that teed off on Thursday that would not likely make the cut, will tee it up on Saturday (today) at the Masters! While well back at +1 and chasing a -8, Friday is moving day at Augusta National. Who knows better than Tiger Woods what one must do on Friday to get back into contention for Sunday?

Woods, must post one of the best scores today to have any chance to chase down down the leader for what would be his 6th Green Jacket. Improbable? Yes, but so was just being on that first tee on Thursday. So was posting a -1 on the first day. So was fighting back after a +4 start on the front nine on Friday to post a +2 (total of +1) and so was to make the cut. As Gary Koch would say Tiger once again was “Better than most”! Tiger is tied for 19th to start the day today. With 2 days left (Friday known as moving day at the Masters) crazier things have happened in golf. AND THIS IS TIGER!

Nearly half the field that started on Thursday went home yesterday. Tiger is still standing, or I should say still walking! Walking a difficult windy and soft course that is hard enough in perfect conditions was going to be and still is, his greatest challenge. Is he capable of posting the best score of all those still in it? Yes! Will he? I am not going to say no, he has already done more than expected. What we expect to see is not the same as what he expects to do. Regardless, Tiger is back!

SERGIO’S WORLD

Everything is now good in Sergio’s world.   He has been playing on the PGA tour/(and European) for many years, with as much talent as anyone; only to go majorless, until now.  Finally, Sergio Garcia is a major Champion, a champion of the elitist of all, “The Masters”.

All is great in Sergio’s world.   He is to marry a beautiful Texan.  He is in love.  He plays the game he loves, and now has one of the championships that has always alluded him.   If an American was not to win, I wanted Sergio to win.   His expression of happiness on the 18th green (the first playoff hole), will be a classical moment in sports.   Sergio did this on what would have been the 60th birthday of his hero, fellow countryman (Spain) Seve Ballesteros.    Touche to Justin Rose, a great sport.

Well done, congratulations to Sergio Garcia.

IT’S THE MASTERS

The first major golf tournament of the year begins Thursday morning at Augusta, Georgia.   The Masters to me  is the greatest of all the majors.   It is Bobby Jones’ play ground, and it plays out just the way he wanted.   Its challenging, difficult, fast and furious.

It will be Master’s Champion Ben Crenshaw’s last Masters as a player.   A true gentlemen of the game.  It may be physically too difficult to expect, but it would be great to see him make the cut.  That would a tremendous achievement and great to watch.  I wish him well.

Will Bubba Watson, repeat and slip on the Green Jacket for the third time, or will it be young Jordan Spieth winning his first major?   Rory McIlroy completing the grand-slam of golf with a win?   Then there is Tiger!

Tiger is back……after about two months away from competition, working on his short game, he says he is ready to play.   Will he make the cut?   That is the biggest question bouncing around Augusta National.   We’ll probably have a good idea after Thursdays round, or maybe following the front nine.   If Tiger has regained his chipping, pitching and putting, we’ll seem him on Sunday.  Not only will you see him, you’ll see him in contention.   It’s the Masters, he wants to win more majors, it’s where his focus is.

Some believe, he’ll never win another major, some doubt he’ll ever win again.   Tiger is 39 years of age.  The media doesn’t question if 44-year-old Phil Mickelson will ever win another major, just when.   Phil has been having his own struggles, I don’t believe he is finished either.   Even the Golf Channel’s critics doubt Tiger.   So many have forgotten how great Tiger has been.   If anyone has the ability and raw talent to regain his form, it is Tiger Woods.

I would not bet against him, “It’s the Masters.”
