Hemingway and Donne – For Whom the Bell Tolls

“For whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee” comes from the poem by John Donne, of course.  For many years I did not realize it came from a poem.   Despite my lack of knowledge of poetry I was familiar with the line and was curious of its meaning.   I had for many years believed it to be from Hemingway’s book For Whom the Bell Tolls.

I often would recite this lyric, not really knowing why, as I was fascinated with how it sounded.   Mind you, I was quite young and poetically ignorant.  One day I checked Hemingway’s book out at the library and began to read.   I could not put the book down.  It was such a great book, not one dull paragraph.   I kept anticipating where the famous quote would show-up.  What would a bell be doing out in an isolated mountain region?  I waited patiently ……….the words never came, not even at the end of the story.  It was not there, are you kidding?  How could such a great lyric not be in the book.  There was more to this, the title only covered half of the line.   I did my research……then discovered it in Donne’s poem.   My desire to find the line written somewhere pushed me to read a terrific book and a poem I did not know existed and would not have otherwise picked up.  It only proves wisdom is gained when you have the will to lose the ignorance.

WE WON’T GET ANOTHER NOAH

Its half past midnight, August 3rd present day.  Unbelievably, pleasantly mild outside for summer in Missouri.  There is evidence of an active skunk nearby, hopefully it has not sprayed my Siberian Husky.  I call her Sky, Blackhawk’s Gray Sky is her registered name.

I have many thoughts bouncing around in my head, none related to the other, not directly anyway.   I don’t recall my parents ever giving much thought and concern about the kind of world their children and grandchildren would live.

I have two adult sons and a daughter.  After next month, all will be married. I have  three wonderful grandsons, the youngest born seven months ago, an eight and ten-year old.

With all that is bad and wrong with the world, what will their lives be like?   I know when my parents were growing up and while raising me, the world wasn’t perfect then either.   My father fought in Korea.   It was a violent world long before the present day; just seems like more of it spreading around.   Then again, there were 2 wars that were world-wide.  I guess it’s not much different now than the past after all.

I watched the movie NOAH this evening.   You know the story, a corrupt world being destroyed by our Creator.  God as He is known to me.  Noah’s family was spared to give mankind a fresh, 2nd chance Thanks Noah but we haven’t done so well.  Maybe my children and grandchildren (hoping for a granddaughter some day) along with yours will figure it out.  I’ll pray they do.

WE ARE VOICES TO BE HEARD/ THE GOV MUST LISTEN

Our voices are being heard, sometimes we have to shout to see the evidence of that; but stay patient you are a force.

I believe our tweets and blogs may be the greatest factor of raising awareness.  We can not count on the national or even world media to accurately inform us.  I am also not so naive to believe everything from a tweet or blog.   But usually where there is a lot of smoke, there is a fire.  Keep digging to find the truth.

We are beginning to see a bit more news coverage from the major networks on the Southern border immigration issue here in the U.S.   I believe action from our government and president is in part due to the public outcry.  A lot of that comes from right here on what we write and share with our followers.   They also know we vote!

This morning our local St. Louis news gave immigration a stunning 2 minutes, with video.   Not a big deal you say?  That’s up by about  one-and-a-half minutes.  Will be interesting to see what the national TV will release.  Hopefully I haven’t missed already.

My point is we can make a difference.   I know the stance on illegal immigration is mixed even split, but if we remain active our government will, sooner or later respond.   It may not go the way you or I want it in the end, but stay vocal…..this is our country.   We are the voice of awareness.

ADDICTED TO WRITING AND JUST GETTING STARTED

I introduced myself a day or so ago as a rookie to blogging and freelance writing.   I normally write about politics and current events, focusing on issues the mainstream media does not report.  I said then that I would like to post articles in the writer’s category occasionally to break the monotony and break to a lighter side.

As a newbie to writing I find myself becoming addicted to placing my body at this keyboard and writing something.    I already posted two political articles today……didn’t feel like a third, but I had to write.  I believe in the 6 to 7 weeks of experience I have now gained I see improvement.  I have a question for the more seasoned writers.   Is it good that I am addicted so quickly and can’t get enough?   I don’t want to just put words down, I really am striving for quality and content.   Is there a point where it is too much?   I know once in a while you need a break, even a vacation.

I was given a Nook a few months ago as a gift.  I bought books to read and found like most items you purchase, you get what you pay for.   Because I like to read a lot I would buy some books rather cheaply and some I ordered that were free.   I became quite frustrated with the lower valued readings, as the grammar and spelling errors were ridiculous.   I got to thinking, I can write better than this.   By all means I don’t believe writing is easy, it is not.

I had thought about writing before, but never really knew how to get started, and was I articulate enough?   My nook readings convinced me I should give it a go.  So, here I am and enjoy it more than my day job as an International Banker, which is not as glamorous as it sounds.

I could use some tips on the addiction thing, and critiquing is also encouraged, but don’t beat me up too bad.   Thank you for reading.

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF

Writing

This is my first blog in the category for Writers.   I have been reading blogs or articles if you prefer for a few weeks now, but until now have not contributed.   I have been blogging for about six weeks within the theme of politics under the Arlin Report (arlinreport.com).  I enjoy stirring things up with readers for reaction and to get people involved in politics, if only to speak out, Lord knows we need help.

I am a 62-year-old male from Missouri, a rookie at freelance writing.    I  am an International Banker by day, but wish to retire someday, with writing as a hobby/retirement gig.   Most of what I write will be on the political side.   I have  a political science major with about nine years of experience as a city councilman.    However, politics can get tiresome, even frustrating at times, possibly because you lose hope of where we are headed as a nation.   I will occasionally write about other topics, just for a break and to move to a lighter side.

I have a writer’s website I am attempting to finish for launching, just short of an article or two for show.   Once I have the website released, I will share it with you.  Hope to hear from some of you soon.
