Spring’s continuous, heavy rainfall in Missouri means flooding, severe flooding.  It has rained (poured in many areas) for several days, and will continue on Sunday (April 30, 2017).  It looks like we may get a break on Monday and Tuesday, but then the wet stuff returns on Wednesday and Thursday.   Hopefully the forecasters get it wrong.

Missouri has a history of flooding throughout the entire state.   With so many rivers running through Missouri, flooding is inevitable and a way of life for many.   Flooding has affected almost all of us during our lives at one time or another, if not directly with friends and family.   To give you an idea of the number of rivers that flow through our state here is a river map.

I lived in a flood plain for several years, stayed awake during heavy rain, never got flooded, though it had in the past (before we bought the house).    We sold the house then moved to higher ground.    That house is no longer there…….. government bought it out, its vacant lot, or a little park now.   Currently live in St. Charles/St. Peters area, just a few minutes from the Missouri River.   Went to Hollywood Casino tonight; right near the Missouri River, crossed a couple of bridges to get there, the river is up and rising.

At this moment there are areas experiencing flooding, other areas they know its coming in the next day or two………roads and highways (interstates included) are closing.   Property will be damaged, repairable for the most part; but lives will be lost….

We’ll survive, we always do!

  1. Over here on Long Island, NY, flood tide is 1.5 feet above high tide, and we had in 2012, SuperStorm Sandy, with 10.5 feet above flood tide (12 feet).
After everything had gone, I started looking at things. Before the flood, I brought up concerns in 2010/2011, when PBS aired a program on the 1938 Flood, and I checked public records. My home was built in 1929 and sold in 1938, at the end of the year. Then I looked, and most homes in the area sold in late 1938 and during 1939. The problem was lack of engineering design of an area of lowlands. The Romans, had a formula of, for every 100 feet in length/distance, a one foot elevation is needed to make water flow. Same formula of the Aquaduct in Europe that delivers water. The flooded areas, from my eye estimation are twelve feet of decline in grade. If a small area was to be elevated in grade, either retaining walls built in or extra materials added for soil to reach saturation point and flop out, the land settling in thirty days or why not over a year, then build new homes and drainage. People complain of cost, but insurance and losses, are worse.
For some reason, since the flood in 2012, that I went through and rode out, I feel closer to the ocean, while many moved out of the community. The area never bounced back. Neighbors of mine were better than most of my blood relatives. Now they are gone, and the new homeowners are from Manhattan (NYC). German made cars all over the place. Horns blowing (!!), and they call the news stations for inches of flood waters over in the streets. They do not know the waters nor do they want to learn. They are, complaining bitterly about flooding and nobody has the smarts to look at the grade and elevation.

    1. Always interesting stuff from you. I just did a post of 1993 and 2015 flooding in Union Missouri. Some of the video is from the street I grew up on. Our house never ever flooded, we were up high enough. But within 50-75 yards of where I grew up the ground is low……and there has been mass flooding. An Ice Plant, owned by friends/neighbors of ours is in the video, it was just down the street. Water is very destructive.

      1. Then the big cleanup. Mud. Sewage. Bleach always soldout in every supermarket.
My home on the water was higher than other but we had 42 inches inside the house. Running current and tide inside the house. Saltwater later smelled of low tide and it took a while to get the smell out completely. Goodbye carpeting. Two things I know and helped out. I drive big trucks to run through saltwater (I replace brake lines about every three years). I also have solid oak furniture, because it can stand up to salt water. Brought the oak stuff outside, ran the garden hose over it, and today it is still in pretty good condition. All the other furniture does not stand up to the saltwater.

“Interesting”? Yeah, I’ve led a real “interesting” life. I’m a high milage model.

  2. TAKE CARE AND WISHING YOU THE BEST. THE WEATHER IS TOTALLY SPOOKED ON THIS PLANET, AND WITH THE TECHNOLOGIES BEING MANIPULATED THROUGH HAARP, DARPA, AND CERN. THESE FOLKS WHO CREATED THESE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF EVIL MANIPULATION SHOULD BE SHOT DEAD. IT IS NOT MANKIND’S JOB TO CREATE WEATHER; IT IS OUR JOB TO RESPECT IT. THERE ARE PLACES WHERE IT IS DRY TO THE BONE. BY THE WAY, PERHAPS NO RELATION TO THE TOPIC, APRIL 30-MAY 01 ARE CONSIDERED high days of importance for the satanists, also pagans, witches, and communists fall under this umbrella as well. IT IS KNOWN AS THE BELTANE. MAY 01 IS KNOWN AS MAY DAY, REALLY IT IS A DAY THAT COMMUNISTS CELEBRATE. satanists are now looking for human blood to mix in with their baked goods, used as a celebration. THIS IS A FACT.
